Overview
The Thimphu Tshechu is the kingdom's largest festival, held annually in the courtyard of Tashichho Dzong. For three days, monks and laymen perform sacred cham dances in masks of gods, demons and animals, believed to bless onlookers and impart Buddhist teachings.
This journey keeps you in and around the capital — the festival itself, the great Buddha Dordenma statue, the Sangaygang viewpoint, a hike to the Wangditse monastery ruins, and the markets, museums and craft schools that make Thimphu a destination in its own right.
Festival dates follow the Bhutanese lunar calendar and shift each year. We confirm exact dates against the official festival calendar before you book — never assume dates until we have checked them together.
