A glacial bowl of open marshland, monastery and pine forest — winter home of the rare black-necked crane.
Phobjikha is one of Bhutan's most loved valleys: a wide, glacially carved bowl of marsh and meadow ringed by forest, watched over by Gangtey Monastery on its wooded ridge.
From November to February, endangered black-necked cranes descend from Tibet to winter here — an event the whole valley celebrates with a festival in their honour.
